8 Queer-Friendly Podcasts to Discover this LGBTQ+ History Month

by Althaea Sandover

Seeing as it’s LGBTQ+ History Month in February, now is a great time to find queer-friendly spaces and support the creative endeavours of people from the LGBTQ+ community. Of course, we should all be doing this all the time, which is why we’ve put together this list of queer-created podcasts that should keep you busy far beyond February! If you’re a podcast fiend like us you’ll absolutely want to get these unique sounds in your ears.

So, get your headphones out and don’t forget to rate, review, and click subscribe...

The Bisexual Agenda

Meet Kit, “your local bisexual who literally can’t stop talking”. In each episode, Kit chats to her favourite bisexuals on a range of subjects - from queer books and bisexual cinema, to all-consuming crushes and sex ed in schools. You’ll hear from one or two special guests, too, including author Clare Fisher and journalist Pip Williams. Expect a laid-back but elegantly edited hour of topical musings from lovely people.

Dreamboy

Give yourself a break from true crime with this eerie, fictitious tale about a sleep-deprived musician called Dane. Somewhere between the intense dreams, explicit Grindr encounters, and weird girl scouts he keeps seeing everywhere, Dane finds time to get caught up in a rescue mission for a zebra... Expect to feel enthralled and delirious (and maybe even a bit turned on?) as you’re swept away by uncanny encounters and an immersive score.

Trans Doe Task Force

TDTF is very new to the podcast scene, but this grassroots organisation has existed for a while. Their mission is to use DNA and forensic genealogy to help identify the unknown deceased in John and Jane Doe cold cases, who may have been transgender or gender non-conforming. Expect a podcast that’s finding its feet, but uncovering a whole world within forensic police work that we should all be talking about.

AfroQueer

Platforming the stories of queer Africans from across the continent and diaspora, this is a must-listen for anyone interested in the history of African queerness and the laws that influence it. Hosted by Selly Thiam, this fascinating podcast delves into crucial topics such as sex testing in sports and the politics of Gay Pride. Expect well-researched and professionally edited episodes that will deep dive into an ever-evolving landscape of African LGBTQ+ experiences.

Buffering the Vampire Slayer

Former couple Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo discuss every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, paying extra special attention to all the incredibly gay undertones of the hit TV show. Expect near-hysterical enjoyment of all the queer innuendo, interviews with your favourite Buffy cast members, and brilliantly original Buffy-themed songs written and performed by the hosts.

Conversations with People Who Hate Me

Dylan Marron knows what it’s like to be trolled online - although now he’s been making this podcast a while, he doesn’t call them “trolls” anymore. Dylan reaches out to people who leave nasty comments on the internet, encouraging them to chat to the subject of their vitriol and delve into the motivations behind their actions. Expect the guests to challenge your expectations, and the host to overwhelm you with generosity.

Made of Human with Sofie Hagen

Comedy hero Sofie Hagen asks the question we’re all struggling with - how does anyone deal with being a grown-up human person? Interviewing an eclectic mix of comedians, creatives, and activists, Sofie coaxes out everything from socialist rants to demands for more dyke representation (thank you, Grace Petrie). Expect to get riled up and soothed in equal measure, as each guest dishes out hardcore truths and heart-warming pearls of wisdom.

Dear Jessamyn

Here’s a bonus inclusion, since the first episode only aired this week! We just couldn’t resist mentioning this podcast given that it’s hosted by Jessamyn Stanley, the fat femme yoga teacher revolutionising an exercise sphere long-dominated by a very specific type of body. She’s promising a “bi-weekly, cannabis-infused audio advice column”, with season one set to be all about polyamory.
