#PodcastPick – David Tennant Does a Podcast with…Olivia Colman
In the midst of the dark January days this year, something magical happened: David Tennant launched a podcast. Former (and arguably, favourite) Doctor Who, beloved Broadchurch detective and Marvel villain, Tennant is a national favourite, and I for one was thrilled to hear his delectably soothing Scottish syllables grace the podcast-sphere.
His first episode featured the widely-loved actress Olivia Colman, who first found fame in iconic Channel 4 comedies Green Wing and Peep Show. Having been in the public eye in Britain for several years, Colman has been somewhat catapulted into global stardom by her recent role as Queen Anne in the darkly comic historical drama The Favourite. (Incidentally this role has just landed her the Oscar for Best Actress.)
What translates immediately in this interview is the friendship that precedes it; they affectionately refer to each other as ‘Colly’ and ‘DT’. Having never heard Tennant in the role of interviewer before I was relieved to find him every bit as clever, kind, and curious as expected, along with his usual rakish wit. Colman seems almost absurdly lovely - perhaps this is the key to her epic talent for provoking compassion for even the most unlikeable characters. They talk about mutual pals, the bizarre balance of fame and normality, and savouring the simple things. Listening felt like having tea with old friends.
Tennant has already had some other spectacular guests this season, including Hollywood legend Whoopi Goldberg and the North’s very own Doctor, Jodie Whittaker! Subscribe here.
