#PodcastPick – Griefcast: Episode 63
For a little context about Cariad Lloyd’s Griefcast, it’s not as sad as it sounds. A comedian herself, Cariad presents the podcast with her usual quick and whimsical wit. She approaches these discussions of grief with both kindness and curiosity; her interest in the emotion stemming from the death of her father when she was 15.
In early December, Cariad had presenter and author Dawn O’Porter on the show, to discuss Dawn’s mother, who died when she was a little girl. They discuss the blurriness of childhood memories, the way we idolise our parents, and the unbelievable resilience of mothers. There’s much talk of how grief can unexpectedly alter the dynamic between siblings, and Dawn paints a vivid picture of her upbringing in Guernsey.
Cariad is a thoughtful interviewer; she navigates the heavy subject matter with the dexterity of someone well-versed in grief, and gives Dawn the space to reflect and process her questions. The inclusion of such uncensored emotion makes this show incredibly reassuring, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who has encountered loss, no matter how long ago it may have been.
